Today we went up to N.GA for the Master's fall event. The boys have been learning about the Oregon Trail and Master's "played" it out for them in full fashion today. There was nothing held back... The event was complete with "Outlaws" on horses and an Indian fight with one Indian tribe in full headdress gear.
The boys went as cowboys and they really did look very cute.
The Oregon Trail activity was about 2.5 hours long and consisted of 6 "families/teams" of like age groups.
There were about 10 kids per team with a parent "guide" and then a couple parents who went along on each wagon to "lead" the kids in making decisions. It was really cool. At each station they were given a scenario and then 3 choices that had to be made as a "family". Each choice either had everyone living, the loss of a good or food, or someone dying. They had to say several times that it was only a game and if you "died" you did not really die......
Quentin was "Paw" in his group and had to spend the money wisely for his group. The other members got to put in their opinions but ultimately Quentin had to decide what was best for the family. Zachary was part of the Hunter "clan/family" and they did well until the end when they lost a couple of members because they did not buy salt to cure the meat and the meat went back and they starved. :(:(
Zachary lived and so did Quentin... Q could not wait to tell me that he lived when he was getting off his wagon....When the Outlaws attacked our wagon one of the little girls got scared and hid.... She was so tight in a little ball...
She was a younger member of the group and she was so cute....After the Trail was over the kids did square dancing while waiting for dinner to be served. Quentin did not want to do it and by that time was not feeling his best and stuck pretty close to me. Zachary raided some chips and got into a wagon to hide... He was found by two little girls from his class that were trying desperately to talk him into being their partner for the dance....
I had to laugh because they were doing everything but pull him from his spot to get him to go.It was starting to get dark and chilly and I decided the boys had enough. We don't eat chili and that is what they were serving so I talked the boys into leaving and I would buy them dinner.
We also wanted to go visit Pat who is back in a rehab facility with a broken knee... Since we were in Athens anyway I thought it was a good time to swing by and check on her and let the boys see her. She was thrilled to see them and they put back on their cowboy gear to show it off to her.Zachary fell asleep on the way home (of course) both boys were pretty tired but they really had a great day between the Park this morning and the huge event all day!

So much fun! D studied the Oregon Trail with the homeschool group - the Homeschool Huskies program - and loved it. The boys look so cute in their cowboy getup. I'm glad they both survived!
